First of all, Nico Nico Douga is like a Japanese version of YouTube. People can share videos and they can upload, comment, rate… Etc just like YouTube. But the main difference between Nico-Dou and YouTube is how people’s comments will appear. It is a bit difficult to describe, but if you type a comment on YouTube, it will just appear on the same page below the video screen, correct? But if you type a comment on Nico-Dou, it will appear in the video screen as the video is played. For example, if you type something on 1′ 00″ of the video, this comment will appear on the video screen when someone else plays the video and when the video reaches 1′ 00″. You can choose to show or hide other people’s comments, but if you chose to show other people’s comments, you can almost feel like you are watching the video with other people and you can see what other people thought in exactly which part of the video. I hope you got the idea from my bad explanation…

As for how Nico-Dou relate to Japanese pop culture, you should definitely look into Otaku culture and perhaps have a look at Japanese website called 2ch. It is often said that the Japanese have two personas. One is a public persona (polite, hard-worker, etc) and the other is a private persona. Japanese society lets people to do whatever they like to do in their own time and no one will blame you for that. They are allowed to be into their own world. Also, many of the Japanese are very shy, so they find it comfortable communicating with people via internet. This is why Otaku (geeky) culture has grown so much in Japan and 2ch is the biggest Otaku website. So many Otaku people visit this website everyday and there are so many words or art which were originally created within this website among Otaku people and spread to the entire Japan. Nico-Dou reminds me of 2ch so much as they use their own words and they are sharing a virtual experience together. I hope this helps!!
