Nancy asks…
Chiang Mai Hotels, Chiang Rai Hotels?
How are hotels in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, northern Thailand? I have read some said most of them are Lanna style. How is that like? Luxurious ones? Expersive?

Dean Cortez answers:
Lanna Style is a traditional style in the north of Thailand.
Many hotels there decorated by Lanna Style. It’s beautiful and peaceful.
In Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai have many hotel style like luxurious, cheap, comfortable and expensive. It depends on your budget.
If you like to stay in luxurious hotel in Chiang Mai, I recommend you to stay at Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi Hotel, Lanna Style. I think it’s the most expensive and luxurious hotel in Chiang Mai. And in Chiang Rai the luxurious one is Anantara Golden Triangle Resort and Spa Hotel.
Or if you like to stay in budget hotel, I can suggest you also. In Chiang Mai I recommend you stay at Lotus Pang Suan Kaew Hotel – it’s Lanna Style and convenient to visit major attractions in the city. And in Chiang Rai, I recommend Rimkok Resort Hotel. It’s beutiful and luxurious hoel but the costs’re quite cheap.

John asks…
Chiang Mai Hotels?
I am planning to travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai via night train arriving in the morning. Should I book a place to stay first before leaving? or book it when I arrive? If you people do have places <$5 to recommend I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

Dean Cortez answers:
It is not high season so you will have plenty of room choices.. If I read that correctly as less than $5 – then head for the Tapae gate and there are lots of inexpensive guesthouses in that area.
Also – the buses are far more comfortable than the train. Most have big comfy, reclining chairs etc.. Get a vip bus.. Go during the day and you can get to see a little too…
Best ken
