Hot Toddy

Mary asks…

Does anyone know how to make a hot toddy?

I’ve been told that for a cold a hot toddy is a good remedy, but I haven’t a clue how to make one and I can’t find my bartender’s bible. HELP!!!

Dean Cortez answers:

A “hot toddy” is a group of drinks, not one single recipe: anything that uses a hot, non-alcoholic base (like tea or cider) plus alcohol (typically rum, but can be anything really); sweeteners (sugar, honey, molasses) and spices are really optional.

One recipe is: 1 cup hot apple cider, 2 oz rum, 1/2 teaspoon sugar or honey, a pinch of cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg. Float an orange slice in it, and enjoy!

Sandra asks…

A good Hot Toddy recipe?

I got a really bad cold. I think that some delicious hot toddy could make me feel better. Anybody know of a good recipe?

NOTE: I do not drink alcohol, so no whiskey. =)
All of these sound delicious. I’ve just tried out Susakin’s recipe, and I feel very much better. It was tasty as well. No more stuffy nose! =D Thank you for the recipes–I’ll be trying out each of them until my cold completely vanishes.

Dean Cortez answers:

My mother always gave us hot lemonade…. Mmmm…. Not bad.

Hot apple cider or hot apple juice with a sprinkle of cinnamon or a cinnamon candy stick in it is nice.

I had a Hot Buttered Rum once and it was very nice. Here’s a recipe from Emeril:

Hot Buttered Rum
Ingredients
1 stick unsalted butter, softened
2 cups light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
Pinch ground cloves
Pinch salt
Bottle dark rum
Boiling water
Directions
In a bowl, cream together the butter, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Refrigerate until almost firm. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the butter mixture into 12 small mugs. Pour about 3 ounces of rum into each mug (filling about halfway). Top with boiling water (to fill the remaining half), stir well, and serve immediately.

Daniel asks…

Got a rotten cold and my mans making me a hot toddy, how do you make yours? heat the whiskey or add hot water?

my partner says the best way is to heat up the whiskey and then add some hot water, lemon juice and honey. I say add the whiskey to some hot water then add honey and lemon. How do you make yours?

Dean Cortez answers:

Your partner is committing the blasphemy of helping the alcohol evaporate faster. I add the honey first, then stir in boiling water, then lemon, then the whiskey. That retains the alcohol best.

However, he means well. Keep him.

Chris asks…

I have the flu ick. What good hot toddy recipes without just the 3 basics do you use?

Also I’d LOVE a few jokes or anything funny to just waste the time since I can’t sleep.
