Why do most Malaysian Chinese call thier children ‘ah boy’ or ‘ah girl‘ instead of their proper names?

We have found out we are expecting a girl.

we are struggling to think of names though and wanted a few suggestions what would be your top two English names and/or your top two asian/arabic names.

I know this is quite a contrast but my hubby is half malaysian so we would consider an arabic name although our son is called Stanley so an English name would be just as good.
